Amherst Island Wind Info |
|
In an effort to find out more about wind farms and their issues, I find myself confused with claims and counterclaims. In an effort to try and gather information and then evaluate it, I've set up this web site, just in the off chance someone else would benefit from my efforts. Besides, it's only costing me time and $8 a year, so why not. I am not going to widely advertise this site; I guess eventually the google robots will show up and I'll be #1000 in a list of 1,000,000 hits.
In my efforts so far, I've been fairly disappointed in the usefulness and validity of most of the information I've found. I've been surprised by this, as wind farms and their potential problems are not new. And too often the information I've found is presented in an effort to convince me, not to educate me. Once you get through all the initial filters and actually read them, many of the reports are in fact useful, but it seems there is no honest source to evaluate their importance or applicability. I hope to add intelligent comments and criticisms to those reports I find interesting, but I am not educated in the field and I am likely to miss important points. Please keep this in mind and be easy with me. An email with suggestions or corrections is always welcome, as long as it's civil.
I'll be adding content as I have time and energy. Some of the material I've come across was discovered only by accident, so if there is something of interest you'd like to have me look at, please send me an email and I'll get right to it.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have to discuss my biases. I think global warming is potentially a serious problem, and humans ought to start doing more to conserve energy and finding new sources. I think conservation is far more effective than finding new sources of energy, all of which have further environmental downsides, even the renewable sources. My favorite plan, given what appears practical with today's technology, is to go more nuclear and use more electricity for transportation. I can understand why many people wouldn't be happy with this plan (and I'm not very happy with it either) but I don't see any practical alternative.
We have precious few areas of natural beauty remaining and we shouldn't unnecessarily destroy them. For Amherst Island itself, I think the destruction isn't worth the benefits. Even if the benefits could be distributed more equitably among the residents, I don't think there's enough to go around. Thus, I am against the wind farm plan, at least as I understand it. 80+ large turbines on this Island would essentially turn it into an industrial park and seriously divide the community. My opinion is just that and I understand why others might disagree. This web site is an effort to, as honestly as I can, gather information on both sides of the debate in an effort to get people from both sides (and myself) to fully understand the issues.
In light of my resistance to the project, I am a member of CPAI. I don't make most of their meetings and have little input to their operation. When discussing CPAI and CAIRE I'll make every effort to treat them equally badly.
